I Survived and Thoughts on Facebook

The past two weeks in school have been probably the busiest I have ever experienced. At times I actually wondered if I would ever be able to get everything I needed to done. On Friday alone I had two major projects, 5 articles to analyze for work, and a midterm looming over my head. Well, as of today at 9:30 PM, it is officially over! (At least for now.)

I survived another week, and next week looks like a good one to breathe and catch back up on everything. I attribute part of my success to getting off of Facebook. I found that instead of checking Facebook, I would instead work on homework. It is a great thing.

The only drawback: people think I'm crazy, and don't understand why I would deactivate my account. The funny thing is that I feel liberated without Facebook. I do miss keeping in touch with friends and family who are far away, which is the only reason I would go back...

Back Off Facebook

I came back from my Facebook hiatus only long enough to set up an event for Kenz's birthday, and to plant some cotton on my farm. I will be off until at least the end of the semester.

It's been nice knowing you.

Goodbye, Farmville. Goodbye, Facebook.

Farmville was taking over my life. It was apparent when I spent an hour last night waiting for my soybeans to turn from 98% to 100% ready to harvest. Pathetic.

I told a friend I was off of Farmville and Facebook. He even witnessed me deactivate my account. So, when he saw me Googleing Farmville pictures, he said I was sick. I swear it was strictly for blogging purposes and not reminiscing about my days as a virtual farmer on Facebook.

So, I got rid of Farmville - and Facebook, too. I will miss them, but not too much.

The Second Step: Correcting the Problem

Hello. My name is McKenzie, and I have a problem.

I am a recovering facebook addict, and I have been purging for 3 weeks, 3 days, and 6 hours.

And, over the past four years, I have collected friends. I have high school friends, freshman friends, RA friends, study abroad friends, school friends, friends-of-friends, church friends... you name them, I've got them. However, in the past few weeks, I have followed my friend's advice (you should definitely read it all here) about how to slowly eliminate unnecessary facebook friends.

I am happy and proud to say that I have gone from over 1200 facebook friends to only 600 friends! (Yes, only.)

-----------

And as an assurance to favorite cousins and friends. If you actually read this blog, I can guarantee that we are facebook friends because...

If I were in a grocery store; in the middle of some serious contemplation over your inner debate between Gala and Red Delicious and I spotted you perusing the potatoes, I would most definitely say hi. Definitely, because I know that you are not just some random high school acquaintance or one of those that-one-kid-I-had-that-one-class-with-a-few-years-ago types.

The First Step: Admitting I Have a Problem

Hello. My name is McKenzie, and I have a problem.

On January 17, 2005 (yes, I know the exact date), I acquired a bad habit, an addiction if you will. And, over the past four years, I have collected friends. I have high school friends, freshman friends, RA friends, study abroad friends, school friends, friends-of-friends, church friends... you name them, I've got them.

Yes, I am a recovering facebook addict.

However, a few weeks ago a friend wrote a blog post here about how to slowly eliminate unnecessary facebook friends.

I have taken her advice, and I am proud to say that I have gone from over 1200 facebook friends to 1027.

My name is McKenzie, and I am a recovering facebook addict. I have been purging for 3 weeks, 2 days, and 3 hours.

Facebook. Cold Turkey.

This week, my good friend Krista blogged about what she was sacrificing for Lent. Mind you, Krista is not Catholic, but she decided to observe the tradition by giving up blogging, blog reader, and facebook. This got me thinking...

As many of you know, I am what you would refer to as a 'facebook addict'. However, in an effort to cram for a finance test, I didn't have a chance to visit facebook until Wednesday night. But before I did, I happened upon Krista's post.

So... I decided to give up facebook for Lent. Mind you, I am not Catholic, but it gave me an excellent excuse to give up my habit cold turkey. So, as of tonight...

I have been facebook free for more than 72 hours!
