Our Special Day

So, I love Valentine's Day. It all really started when I heard a BYU devotional by Bonnie Parkin given the day before Valentine's Day in 2007. The message was "never suppress a generous thought." I loved the motto, and it has helped me have some incredible experiences since that time.

The reason I think these fit so well together is because on that one day each year, society unites in recognizing that line, "never suppress a generous thought." It makes me happy. But, having a valentine or two doesn't hurt.

After the surprise gift on the 13th, our Valentine's day started out on the right foot... delicious omelets (courtesy of Ryan), heart-shaped no less. (:

Then it was off to work and studying and play.

Ryan picked me up from work and we headed to my parent's house to give my dad a birthday card--he is a cupid you know.

We sang and had fun just relaxing, then headed home to...

Surprise roses and hydrangea! (Ryan even said he almost surprised me like this)...

Surprise gifts! (Valentine's Books for Adi and Shoes for Ryan--and I was ohhhh so sneaky.)....

Yummy gruyere and swiss fondue...

That Adi loved.

Some cheesey pictures (literally and figuratively)...

The three of us.

A little smooching...

And an impromptu and special treat of chocolate-covered strawberries (after the chocolate seized)

Adi was a big fan.

All-in-all it was a fabulous, fun-filled day with people I love. And that is the best part.

My two Valentines. It simply doesn't get better than that.

See?

101 Words

101 words to describe my sweet husband and our life together.

Love you.

Story of a Secret

Want to know a story about a secret?

I arrived late to my English class Winter semester of my Junior year (confused buildings after being at BYU for 3 years - RB, Smith Field House, who knows the difference anyway, right? *headslap).  I sat down quickly in an empty seat, which happened to be kitty corner to where Kenz was sitting. What else do I remember from that day? The cute girl (smart, too) with the last name Lawyer who also wanted to be an attorney. Ambitious, cute, and she spoke Spanish (she had just gotten back from a study abroad to Spain and her accent was amazing).

We were put into the same group for projects. She asked if we were all on Facebook, you know, to connect. I'm pretty sure I signed up that same day. One day I looked at some of  her many Spain pictures on Facebook in one of the labs on campus. One of her friends saw me and told her. I was embarrassed out of my mind and terrified that she would think I was some weirdo. She probably did, but was nice to me anyway.

We were friends and when I found out how old she was, I thought I was too old for her (5 years difference). That summer, she interned in Washington and I headed to Chile for research. When I got back, I dialed her number instead of my mom's (my cell phone screen was broken). I awkwardly told her about the situation, called my mom, but then called her back. That same summer, I persuaded her to take a Spanish class with me.

That fall I helped her paint her room, we then went to lunch and later to a football game (she's a die-hard BYU football fan and I was nervous she would discover just how little I know about football, even though I liked going to games). Everything felt so natural.

We saw a lot of each other that semester. After the class we had together, we would go to the library to study... only we didn't get a lot of studying done, mostly just a lot of goofing off and laughing. I invited her to do stuff, she invited me to do stuff.

I went to her birthday/Washington Seminar party at Brick Oven and was a little late because I had to find bamboo. She had mentioned one day that she had always wanted bamboo or something. The closest I came to finding bamboo that night was some weird cactus flower plant thing. I gave it to her (not wanting to show up empty handed for her birthday) and I promised to find her bamboo over the weekend. That same bamboo sits on the counter near our kitchen sink.

We spent more and more time together and one night while walking to or from a basketball game, I held her hand. I wanted to kiss her soon after that, but thought I should take my time because I was a nervous wreck. Honestly, I think I was freaking out because deep down inside I loved her and wanted to be with her always.

On my birthday, she cooked me dinner. She put a lot of effort into the dinner and everything was so nice. Her gift to me was a leather-bound copy of Ficciones. I wanted to kiss her then, but then thought it would be stupid because it would be like, "Oh, happy birthday to me." I kinda wish I had, though.

She invited me to Arizona over Christmas break. I hadn't even kissed her and I was meeting her family! Not only that, but they were paying for my flight. It was during that trip that I knew I was utterly and completely in love with that girl.

One day I'll buy her a Mercedes just to sit in the passenger seat and look over at her beautiful self driving a beautiful car.

In January, I became a little overwhelmed with how much I loved her, along with the fact that I had to have my Chile research ready to present at a conference soon. We took a cabin trip with my family and I wasn't very attentive and sort of ignored her (something I regret to this day). Things were rough and somewhat awkward for a couple of days. We went somewhere and after dropping her off, I knew we had to talk. We went for a drive and talked about everything, I apologized for my behavior and explained my stress about the conference.

I distinctly remember two things from that conversation:
1. She wanted to know what we could do about the situation
2. She said that she loved me - not a googly eyed I love you, it was a sincere I love you and care about you and your success

I don't think I slept at all that night.
I knew I loved her, too.

We decided during that conversation that we would spend less time together during the week because I needed to get things done for the research conference -- that Valentine's day was a big deal. I knew I was going to tell her I loved her that night. I wanted it to be special. The night before, I spent hours looking everywhere for the perfect flowers. My roommates probably thought I was completely nuts.
Valentine's night we went to La Dolce Vita, where we had eaten lunch on our first "date" to the BYU football game.

Later, at her apartment we talked about life. I was looking for the perfect moment to tell her I loved her, when she told me that she loved me. I'm just slow, I guess. I told her I loved her, I knew that I wanted to spend every minute with her, that I wanted to have her by my side. We talked about getting married. It was our little secret. I didn't sleep at all that night either, I was so excited.

And marry we did!

I love Kenz. She is my amazing wife, best friend, confidant, and support.

We have graduated together (twice),

Traveled across the country several times,

and are sharing perhaps our greatest adventure, starting a family.

And so today, I remember our first Valentine's Day, think back on our life together, and smile remembering our little secret.

Last night...

When tidying up before bed, I noticed that my mailbox flag was up. It had been a busy evening, so I wondered if I had missed it when I got home.

However... upon opening it, I saw a shear shear little bag. A gift. Uh oh.

So, ever so nicely I said to Ryan, "Um... was I supposed to look in my mailbox?" And his expression said it all, "No!" Hehe.

Well, he was a sweetie and let me open my gift early because I had found him out.

They're perfect.

And Ryan is a keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeper.

Valentines and the Mailboxes of Love

With the love mailboxes hanging around this month, I've had my eye out for clever valentines. Lately, they've been somewhat lame vintage valentines with all sorts of cherubia (yeah, just made that word up). But today, I hit the jackpot.

I can't wait to stuff some of these in the mailboxes of love.

And wait for it... my favorite:

I'm not sure how she'll react to the long-bottom bit, but it's hilarious. For the record, I don't think her bottom is at all, um...long (long bottom = saggy bottom?). It's quite perfect, in fact. (And that, friends, was probably too much info to send out to the internets.) I guess I'll find out in a few minutes after Kenz has read this post and then texts me. :)

Vintage Yet New

Ryan and I seldom craft. We often find it wasteful, but even more than that, we just don't want stuff hanging around.

However, it seems that around various holidays (fall/halloween/valentine's) we get our craft on.

The other day Ryan asked if I wanted to do this. What a great idea!

I couldn't find tin mailboxes, so I called around to some craft stores for other ideas...

And that evening, with a few minor adjustments to our non-existent crafting budget, we walked into Hobby Lobby and walked out with $15 worth of craft supplies.

We got some themed paper... and Ryan even printed out some vintage valentines. (:

Some "Mod Podge"...

And three cardboard mailboxes. (:

Fortunately we had a few crafty brushes to use...

And use them we did!

I think I might have missed out on my childhood or something because you'd think I would have done this before... but then again, maybe I have. And have just chosen to block out those memories...

We let them dry...

And took pictures of our final products. :)

Here's to the month of love!

Let the love notes and valentines begin!

Valentine's Day and Birthday Wishes

Valentine's Day was exciting, and much better than anticipated!

First off... Adrielle's 1-year Doctor's Appointment! Adrielle is now 64th percentile for weight, 32nd percentile for height (definitely an error considering that 3 months before she was less than a half an inch different), and 93rd percentile for head circumference... We love our little girl and are so grateful she's grown so well this past year!

Check out how darling this video is! Ryan and Adi have such a cute relationship. I love this.

And yes, my little girl is wearing a tutu. It was very festive. :)

Fast forward through the 1-year shots and tears and most of the day... Around 2pm I wandered over to the bookstore. I was so worried. I felt bad that I didn't have a 'gift' for Ryan. We went shopping last week and found some fun things, but I didn't have a gift for him to open. So, I searched the bookstore high and low (figuratively and literally) and finally found something we had talked about previously and a little something for Adrielle too! I ran to get them wrapped and went back to work.

Around 4pm, someone knocks on my door and...

Surprise!

Ryan and Adi had driven down early from the U and brought be a bouquet of my favorite flowers.... Aren't they beautiful!?

Ryan is so tricky because each year I know for sure that he won't have time to get flowers--especially glads because they're so hard to find in February. But each year he manages to get beautiful flowers. And, while roses are wonderful (he bought me pink roses and yellow hydrangea in 2008), I love glads. (But, don't get me wrong, I don't mind roses... ;)

It was fun being able to spend a little extra time with Adi, and she enjoyed the Valentine's suckers the student employees put together in the office. She opened her gift--a set of blocks, puzzle, and book to help her learn her ABCs and Ryan opened his too...

A nice tie rack to display his ties. I love how this looks.

That evening, Ryan and I threw together an impromptu celebratory dinner of yummy fish, potatoes, bruschetta, cauliflower, and left-over chocolate-covered-strawberries...

(I say 'left-overs' because my mother-in-law made them for our Valentine's Day/Birthday Family Party.)

to celebrate... my dad's birthday! Yep, he's a Valentine! Happy Birthday again Dad! Hope you had a great day!

While Ryan and I cooked, Adi entertained herself with the computer--she's so inquisitive!

My little computer baby--who knows you may be looking at the next computer programmer.

Oh the Crafty-Craft

I love Martha Stewart, she's fabulous. In fact, when I was about 12 or 13, my dad bought me a subscription to Martha Stewart Living Magazine. Priceless.

However, I am in no way crafty. My mom is crafty. Ryan is crafty. You want the evidence?

Anyway, about a week ago, I found Martha's Valentine's magic...

Don't you love them.

So, I ventured to the dollar store and with my total supplies of $1.00 crayons and $1.17 wax paper, started my first craft project in over two years.

First I turned the crayons into crayon shavings (my thumb says 'ouch')...

Then we cut wax paper and ironed the crayons...

After that and during this event, I traced and cut. Traced and cut. Traced and cut.
After that I used a needle and thread to tie them and tapped them to the window frame...

But, it was all worth the wait, because our window looks fantastic.

The first view of the completed project...

The view from the inside.

It was definitely fun, and although I was skeptical, they turned out fabulously. It brightens up our house and just helps me feel festive! And, despite the skepticism, I was actually proud of myself, and sooo thrilled when my neighbor across the way noticed them the next morning and told me she liked our hearts! Thank you for noticing Meredith!
