Diaries of a Marine Biologist

Yet another way I'm scarring my child for life: the plight of the Floridian manatee.

Did you know that in 2009, the number of manatee deaths due to boat strikes was 97? The previous record was 92 in 2002, and those numbers only account for the manatees found dead. This warrants the question, who is out there counting dead manatees? (Thanks to Wikipedia, I found out it's the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.)

This warranted a discussion with my two year old.

Who insisted I draw her giving the manatee a band aid.

And then, in her own words, she "drew away" the boat propeller.

The future might have just become brighter for manatees.

And fyi, 2012 watercraft-caused fatalities declined to 75.
Good work, FWC manatee counters.

Love your picture. And so sweet that she wanted to give him a bandaid. Poor Manatees.
