Privacy | That is the Question

In 2008, we opted to make our blog private. But, a few months later I realized that I had been paranoid and that exponentially fewer people actually read our blog.

Now here's my dilemma...

Since then, Ryan and I have had a few experiences where we've felt that our privacy and trust has been breached and which have made me in particular want to run screaming back to a private blog. We follow a lot of friends' blogs, and most of them are public, but a few friends have private blogs and whenever they post, they link to facebook.

We want to make sure we are keeping up with friends and family, and know that the point of our blog is for our personal sake and records...

But ladies and gentlemen, to go private or not to go private, that is the question.

Comments? Advice? Opinions?

Go!

I would love to continue to follow your blog with which ever you choose!

I want an invite if you do go private. One thing that I would take into consideration is that once you are a homeowner and your address is a matter of public records, it is a lot easier for people to locate you if they want to. However, I think if you remain public there are things you can do to be more safe such as not mention your last name, etc. I started using a nickname for Parker just because it made me nervous. Also on the other hand, I know you and Ryan like to blog about a lot of current event topics and so that is a good reason to stay public. Tough decision, good luck.

I took my blog private a long time ago, but that is (honestly) because I make remarks in there that are critical of people who would likely read the blog if I weren't to keep it password-protected. That doesn't seem to be your problem here. ;)

It depends on how seriously you feel about the breaches that have occurred. I know a lot of couples who keep their blog private so they can comfortably post pics of their kids and not worry about pedophiles seeing them, for example. I personally see nothing wrong with keeping your blog private because it allows you greater freedom and security in what you write and post, but again, it is something to be weighed and judged in the balance of access for all potential readers.

That's a hard one. I think it would depend on your breach of privacy, if it was a big thing that makes you uncomfortable that directly relates to your blog then that is a huge push to go private. Tough call!

I love reading your blog so I would love to continue reading it. I don't have kids so for me having mine be private doesn't really make sense to me. I don't post any information on mine that would give a stranger information to steal my identity or anything like that. Now if I had children, I may make it private because I don't know that I want any old person checking out pictures of my kids.
