The Grey Area

I'm over 21, in Vegas, and I played the slots.

Really?, you ask.

Life is not black and white. There is gray area. There is agency.

So... what is open to interpretation? A lot of stuff, even religion.

(Scoff.)

Really.

(Scoff.)

When my mom was a kid, my grandmother told her the evils of gambling. She took her to the gas station where there was a nickle slot machine and demonstrated that gambling was an abomination... by winning $5.00. Fail.

Luckily, my mom learned, and later taught me, the lesson that gambling is risky, irresponsible, and often leads to addictive behaviors. It is something we choose to avoid.

The basic principle is obvious: gambling is bad.

But... like many black and white, Law-of-Moses mentalities, people take it too far.

And... because you have different interpretations, different values emerge. Gambling is bad. Cards games are bad. Cards are bad. Games are bad. And anything like unto gambling is of the devil.

Today I clicked a mouse at an exhibitors booth to see if I won a prize. It was an electronic slot machine on the computer and I lost.

I'm over 21, in Vegas, and I played the slots.

Really?, you ask.

I went to Vegas 1 week after my 21st birthday and my mom took me to play some slots. I lost a lot of (my mom's) money and thought I could have done a better job losing money at the mall. It wasn't fun.

Skip forward 3 years later, I went to Atlantic City with my (non-member) dad for my sister's 21st birthday. My dad gave me $20 and I turned it into $60. It was fun... but being pregnant and poor, I chose the right and cashed out and horded my $60!

I'm glad that I lost a lot of money that first time. I'm also glad that you lost at the booth.

I'll admit, Zach and I set aside a little money for the casino on our cruise. Zach taught me to play black jack and I enjoyed the game. I totally agree with everything you're saying here. I don't have a deep desire or need to find a casino but it was fun to play with my hubby on our anniversary.

Last time we went to Vegas we gambled a few bucks at black jack. At first I felt horribly guilty about it. And then I got over it when we went to lunch on our (modest) winnings. =)
